One of the things that I lived with for a very long time were food “rules.”
These were not uncommon to most Weight Watcher members. I surrounded myself mostly with WW members so we never really saw how odd they were. Some of my rules were:
TRIGGER ALERT FOR THOSE WHO ARE IN ED RECOVERY
- Salsa was a perfectly acceptable salad dressing. No fat and zero Points!
- Mustard was also another great salad dressing alternative.
- When you have a banana a serving is half. How many half rotten bananas did I end up throwing out?
- A serving size of grapes is 12. I literally counted out 12 grapes. WTF?
- Bagels were reserved for vacation or “cheat” days.
- If you keep a 2-liter water bottle in your shower you can get ahead of your water intake before you even start the day. Just note: I had to stop and pee most days on my way to work.
- Never eat Chinese food the day before weigh in. Never. In fact, shave your legs the night before—that might take off .2!
- Spray butter is a perfectly acceptable sub for real butter. #barf (add anything that is fat free to this: cream cheese, cheese, ice cream)
- If you have extra Points you need to eat them, if you are out of Points then you stop eating. This really destroyed my sense of hunger.
- You have to write down everything you eat. This is so tedious. So tedious.
I read these now and am so happy to be free from rules. Does this mean I eat doughnuts for breakfast and a pie for lunch. I don’t, but if I wanted to one day, that is fine. It really means that I eat what feels right for me when I am hungry. It is cool if I want to have a salad, but also fine if I want prime rib. I can have fries with a sandwich or sub a salad. I don’t HAVE TO do anything. I have freedom. There is a blog coming that talks about how hard this freedom with food stuff was for me. I thought I would start with rules first. What are your rules?
